A backup is a complete snapshot of your server at a point in time. You can restore your server to that exact state later, recovering data, configuration, and the operating system.
Every server in your Virtual Data Center comes with an automatic daily backup schedule by default – you do not need to set anything up. You can change the schedule, create extra backups manually, restore from any backup, or delete old ones to free up storage.
Cost: backup storage is billed for usage. The longer you keep backups and the larger your server’s disk, the higher the storage cost.
The page has two sub-tabs:
Next to the button you will see N Backup(s) left – this is how many more backups can be created before reaching your schedule’s retention limit. When this counter reaches 0, the Create backup button becomes disabled. To create more, either delete an old backup or increase the retention in your Backup schedule.
Warning: Restore replaces the current state of your server with the backup. All changes made after the backup was taken will be lost. Make sure you have a recent manual backup if you want to preserve your current state.
To free up storage or make room for new backups within your schedule’s retention:
By default, your server has a daily automatic backup schedule keeping 7 backups. You can change this:
Note: Each server has one schedule. If you increase Backups to keep, more backups will accumulate over time and your storage cost will grow. If you decrease it, the oldest backups will be removed automatically.
Backup storage is billed for usage based on the total size of all stored backups. You can monitor your current backup storage usage on the Resources & IP page of your VDC, and see the breakdown on the Billing page.
To reduce backup storage cost:
