In backup Veeam workflows, the difference is straightforward. A backup job creates the primary restore points from the source system. A backup copy job then transfers copies of those restore points to a secondary repository for longer retention or off-site protection. Veeam automates this process and lets us set separate retention rules. Copy jobs can run immediately or on a schedule, depending on the recovery design.
Restore starts with the recovery target. If only one file is missing, Veeam can perform file-level restore without rolling back the full system. If a VM or server fails, recovery can restore the whole machine or only the affected volume. The practical rule is simple: restore the smallest valid scope first. That reduces downtime, limits disruption, and keeps healthy data unchanged where possible.
There is no single fixed number for every business. Veeam uses retention settings to control how many restore points remain available. In Veeam Backup & Replication, the default retention is the last 7 days. The minimum provided count is 3 restore points. Reliable recovery usually requires more than the minimum because retention should match backup frequency, data change rate, update cycles, and how late an incident may be discovered.
